The Begleri variety derives its name from the Syrian variety Begler. This variety is endemic to the island since Ikaria is the only place where Begleri is being cultivated during the last century. Begleri is cultivated on levelled surfaces all over the island, and its yield rate reaches 500 kilos/1.000mΒ². It is a variety with an intensely aromatic and complex character (citrus aromas, with a kiwi aroma prominence, but also tropical fruits aromas), as well as characteristic acidity. It favours light meals, seafood, yellow cheese, and fruits.
Begleri grape derives its name from the Syrian variety Begler. This variety is endemic to the island of Ikaria and due to the island’s remote location and difficult access, it is the only place where Begleri has been cultivated to date. Begleri is grown on levelled surfaces all over the island and its yield rate reaches 5tons /ha. It is a variety with an intensely aromatic and complex character (citrus aromas, with a kiwi and tropical fruit notes), as well as notable acidity and underlying characteristic minerality, owned to the granitic soil of the island.
For more than 20 years, with love, persistence, faith in organic cultivation and a spirit of creative experimentation, Nikos Afianes, a local Pharmacist, has been growing on the impressive granitic island of Ikaria the two local PGI grape varieties, Fokiano and Begleri. In the course of making wines from experimental vineyards at different altitudes and different microclimates on the Western part of the island, a few innovative styles have been created in a limited number of bottles from these two grapes. Nikos’ wines defend the term ‘fine’ with their elegance, unquestionable quality and development potential with time, whilst they remain anchored to traditional practices and totally pure without any technological intervention or additives.
